Roglic crashes and loses red jersey at the Vuelta
The red jersey lost and still fallen on the departure: For the so-so-sovereign favorites Primoz Roglic, the tenth stage of the 76th Spain tour has been disappointing. The Slovene lost the overall tour to the Norwegian Odd Christian Eiking on Tuesday. The 26-year-old outsider, which has just three victories as a cyclist in the account, drove as a member of a breakout group about eleven and a half minutes ahead of Roglic and thus took the first place. His second stage victory celebrated Australian Michael Storer from the German DSM team.
But that's not enough for Roglic: After the Slovene had dropped on the last mountain of his competitors, he risked too much on the exit and came to fall. The 31-year-old was able to continue the journey with abrasions and reached the goal on the side of the co-favorites. Eiking is now 58 seconds in front of the Frenchman Guillaume Martin and 2:17 minutes before Roglic, who has further good chances on his third Vuelta victory in series. Giro winner Egan Bernal lost time again on Roglic and has to move his dream of the third big round trip victory.
A 31-member group had deposited from the field and driven out a large lead. The German champion Maxilian Schachmann also belonged to the group, but lost the connection on the mountain and landed at the end 5:17 minutes back to Ranked # 23.
On Wednesday, the eleventh leg of the Vuelta leads over 133.6 kilometers from Antequera to Valdepenas de Jaen. The biggest difficulty of the day is a mountain of the second category eight kilometers before the destination. The tour ends on 5 September with a single time trial in Santiago de Compostela.
